Novice Masters

General Program Description

The NYRA Novice Masters program (the "Novice Program") is open to adults who have taken the NYRA Learn-to-Row course or other qualified learn-to-row program.  The Novice Program is a "transitional program" which consists of on the water rowing (spring, summer, and fall) and erging during the winter.  The goal of the program is to facilitate new rowers learning the traditions, terminology, customs and training techniques of the sport of rowing. The Novice sessions are supervised rowing and erg sessions from the date of enrollment until the following June 1.  During the Spring season all Novice Masters are gradually introduced to the more experienced rowers with the goal of being absorbed into the NYRA Masters Program.

Novice Program Schedule

  • Rowing Season:
    • Approximately April 1 to November 1st (weather permitting)
  • Start time:
    • Saturday & Sundays 7:00 AM (on the water)
  • Indoor Season:
    • Approximately November 15 to March 15 (Sundays only at 8:00 AM)
    • During the winter months the masters erg as a team at the boathouse on average once per month.

Coaching

Coaching is available free of charge twice per month by one of NYRAs coaches. All Novice Masters rowing sessions are supervised by NYRA staff or qualified volunteers.

Yoga

Free yoga lessons are made available to the Novice Masters once per month.

Social Events

Social events in Manhattan are regularly scheduled by the Masters and Novice Masters are welcome to participate.  In addition, the Masters team has established a meetup.com site for general recruitment purposes and ease of communication to Masters.

Rowing Fees

Rowing fees are payable at time of submission of enrollment forms and are non-refundable. NYRA accepts checks or credit cards. Membership forms are attached.  All forms must be FULLY executed and submitted with payment BEFORE rowing.  You can also register to join NYRA online   through www.regattacentral.com however a original waiver and release must be mailed to NYRA.

Regattas

Novice Masters generally do not participate in regional or local regattas.  However, NYRA does periodically sponsor intra-club races and the Head of the Harlem River.  All Novice Masters are welcome to participate.
