The 4th Annual
Peter Jay Sharp
Head of the Harlem
Regatta & Festival
Note: The regatta has been rescheduled
for November 1, 2008.
The Peter Jay Sharp Head of the Harlem Regatta & Festival is annually hosted by New York Rowing Association in Upper Manhattan every last Saturday of September in honor of National Estuaries Day. The Regatta & Festival foster community access to the Harlem River while revitalizing it as an environmental and recreational resource.
Races begin near the base of Yankee Stadium and finish at the Peter Jay Sharp Boathouse in Swindler Cove Park. Spectators enjoy spectacular views of Olympic racing shells from the greenway along the Harlem River Drive, recently made more impressively green through the planting of 250 cherry trees by NYRP.
Head Races, a class of regattas, are generally three miles long. Boats race against each other and the clock, starting sequentially approximately fifteen seconds apart. Winners of each race receive the honorary title of Head of the River, in this case, Head Of The Harlem.
The Regatta supports NYRA's Young Scholars Crew, an eclectic mix of New York City youth learning to row on the Harlem River in Upper Manhattan. The Crew is changing the lives of youth, especially those who would normally lack access to the sport.
Partners in the festival and regatta include the Audubon Partnership, City of New York Department of Parks & Recreation, Clif Bar, Concept 2, Fluidgear, Mariner Insurance,
New York City Sports Commission, New York State Department of Conservation's I Fish NY, Peter Jay Sharp Foundation, Proskauer Rose, LLP, and Regatta Ginger Beer.
